Task 1 Letter (GT): Translation Services

Question: You need a translation of a document into a different language, and you have a friend who speaks that language. Write a letter to your friend. In your letter:

  • explain what the document is and why you need a translation.

  • explain why this is urgent and important for you.

  • ask your friend if and when he/she will be able to help you.

Band 8+ Sample Answer:

Dear Fleur,

It's been such a long time since we met in Lyon. It was a great trip and I hope you're still enjoying life. I'm writing to you because I have a favour to ask.

As you may remember, I'm applying for a 6 month internship at Credit Agricole in Lyon. However, my reference letter issued by my university is written in English and it needs to be translated into French for submission. As well as forming part of my job application, this document is also a mandatory requirement for my visa application. Therefore without having this document translated into French, my internship application will be rejected, and I won't be granted an entry visa.

Is there any chance you would be able to help me by having this document translated? In case you are unable to do it yourself, could you please suggest any French translation services that could do the job quickly and for a reasonable fee? How long do you estimate this process could take?

I really appreciate your help and look forward to hearing from you soon. We should hang out when we have a chance to meet again next summer. Dinner is on me!

Best Regards,
