Task 1 Report: Sports Centre Map

Question: The plans above show the layout of a university’s sports centre now, and how it will look after redevelopment. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Band 8+ Sample Answer:

(Intro & Overview) The two maps show the current layout and projected changes due to take place in a university sports centre. Overall the differences in the two maps indicate that this building will treble in size if these plans are carried out, with significant development of the indoor facilities, including a 2nd pool and sports hall.

(Detail 1) Looking at the current map of the sports centre, we can see that it encompasses a small building flanked east to west by two outdoor court areas. The building essentially houses a 25m pool and a modest gym, with changing facilities, minimal seating and a reception counter to the south.

(Detail 2) Turning our attention to the second map, we can see that by the time the planned development is completed, the university sports centre will be three times bigger and will become a fully indoor facility. The two most striking features are an additional large leisure pool to the west of the existing pool, and a sports hall to the east. The areas allocated for the gym and changing rooms will be doubled and trebled in size respectively, and we can expect to see new additions in a dance studio, sports shop and cafe. The only features that are due to be retained are the original pool and adjoining elements including the reception and seating. (218 words).
