Task 1 Report: Export Earnings


Question: The charts above below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.


Band 8+ Sample Answer:


(Intro & Overview) The bar chart provides information about the export earnings of several different categories in a two year period from 2015 to 2016, while the table illustrates percentage changes in the monetary value (in USD) of those product categories. Overall, Petroleum products and Engineered goods produced the highest export earnings among all of the categories while Textiles experienced the largest percentage change in value in the two given years.


(Detail 1) Looking first at the bar chart, we can easily see that export earnings from Petroleum products and Engineered goods were clear leaders throughout, started at approximately $60 billion and $58 billion in 2015 respectively. The following year they both experienced increases, reaching about $63 billion and $62 billion, which amounted to a 3% and 8.5% rise respectively, cementing their dominance in terms of these five categories.


(Detail 2) Conversely , Gems and jewellery, fell by 5.18%, going from about $43 billion in 2015 to just over $40 billion in the subsequent year. Agricultural products showed the a slight change of about $1 billion (from $31 billion to $32 billion) between the two years, accounting for a mere 0.81% change in value. In comparison, Textiles witnessed the most dramatic rise in its figures (recording a 15.24% growth), rising from $26 billion in 2015 and finishing up with about $32 billion in 2016, although it remained the joint lowest value export category with Agricultural products.
