Task 1 Report: School Map

Question: The diagrams above show the site of a school in 2004 and then plan for changes to the school site in 2024. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Band 8+ Sample Answer:

(Intro & Overview) The two maps show the layout of a school in 2004, and projected changes due to take place by 2024. Overall the differences in the two maps indicate that the capacity will nearly double in size if these plans are carried out, with an additional school building, and significant changes to infrastructure, parking and sports facilities.

(Detail 1) Looking at the first map of the school and its grounds, we can see that it encompasses two main buildings in the north of the map, with the main road and car park adjacent to the school entrance in the west, and a large sports field at the back of the school in the east. More than half of the map, mainly to the south is made up of woodland.

(Detail 2) Turning our attention to the second map, we can see that by the time the planned development is completed in 2024, the school will have increased its student enrolment from 600 to 1000. The most striking features is replacing the sports field with an additional third building and adjacent second car park. A new road will also be built to connect the car park to the main road, and a new smaller sports field is due to be constructed to the south. As a result of these changes, the area allocated to woodland will slightly decrease. (221 words)
